Pilates is often recommended if you want to get stronger, improve your posture, and feel more in control of how your body moves.
If you’re new to Pilates, you may have heard of it but not be completely sure what it involves or whether it’s right for you.
The reality is that Pilates is very beginner-friendly, not because it is easy, but because it can be adapted to meet your needs. A good class meets you at your current level and builds from there.
This guide will explain what Pilates is, its key benefits, and what you can expect from your first class at LANO.
What is Pilates?
At its core, Pilates is a method of controlled movement that focuses on strength, stability, and awareness. It works by strengthening the muscles that support your spine and stabilise your joints.
Classes typically involve a mix of low-impact exercises on the mat, sometimes combined with standing movements, all guided by the breath and flowing from one sequence to the next.
Rather than relying on speed or heavy resistance, Pilates emphasises slow, intentional movement, alignment, and deep core engagement.
The aim is to help the body move more efficiently and with greater control in everyday life. Many people notice their muscles working in a new way, while still feeling supported throughout the class.
Over time, these changes begin to show up more naturally in how you move and feel day to day. You may notice:
- Better posture
- Less general stiffness
- Improved control of movement
- A stronger sense of core engagement
- Increased mobility in everyday life
- Greater awareness of how you move
- Improved mood
Is Pilates good for beginners?
One reason Pilates is often a good place to start for beginners is its adaptability.
Every movement can be modified based on your current level of strength, mobility, or confidence. You are not expected to arrive already flexible or fit.
That said, it is not meant to be easy. A good class will challenge you, but in a way that matches your level. Exercises can be made simpler or more difficult, so that you are working at the right intensity for you.
At LANO, this principle is central to how classes are taught. You are guided through each movement and encouraged to work at your own pace throughout.
What happens in a first Pilates class?
We recommend arriving around 10–15 minutes early so you have time to settle in and speak with the instructor if there is anything relevant to your body that day, including any injuries or concerns.
They can then offer adjustments or alternative options where needed, so you feel supported throughout the class.
From there, the class begins and typically moves through a series of simple, structured exercises designed to introduce core principles.
At LANO, our Pilates classes are practised in a gently heated room at 38 °C. The warmth helps the body move more freely and can encourage a deeper connection to your movement throughout the class.
You can expect:
- Clear demonstrations of each movement
- Time to adjust and understand positioning
- Guidance on breathing and control
- Options to make exercises easier or more challenging
How Pilates may evolve at LANO
As our Pilates offering at LANO in Chichester and Southsea grows, we plan to introduce a more structured progression.
This will allow you to build confidence over time, moving from beginner sessions into more advanced classes if you choose to.
What to bring and how to prepare
We recommend wearing comfortable, fitted clothing that allows you to move freely, such as leggings or shorts and a T-shirt or vest. You will practise barefoot, so there is no need to worry about footwear.
You are welcome to bring a water bottle with you, and not to worry if you forget as we have drinks available at the studio. As classes are heated, they can get warm (and sweaty!), so it helps to stay well hydrated throughout the day beforehand.
You can bring your own mat or use one at the studio. For hot classes, a mat towel is recommended. These are also available to hire for £2 at the studio, or you can purchase one here, too.
We also have shower facilities, so feel free to bring along a towel and a change of clothes if you would like to!
Everything else you might need will be here for you, so you can simply arrive and settle into the class.
How often should beginners do Pilates?
Starting with 1–2 sessions per week is usually enough to notice changes in how your body feels.
Pilates works best when it becomes a regular part of your routine rather than an occasional workout. Consistency is key!
